The satement carries poetic device hyperbole. Garbage was the source of livelihood to the parents of rag pickers as it help them to earn some money and for children (rag pickers) garbage was like a treasure hunt as some time in search to material they found 1 or 10 rupee note in the garbage and they search more in order to find more.

Becoz garbage is the only way of food or even of living for them .they are totally depend on garbage for their living .they get food clothes nd any extra usable item from garbage itself. So we can say that garbage is gold for them.
