Total surface area is differ from lateral surface area. Let us take an example like a cubodical room has to be painted which has height 3 m and length 5 m. In this ques we have to find lateral surface area because we do not paint floor. If the ques was to be paint a cubodical box so we will find total surface area bcoz we will paint top floor and all sides of box

Total surface area includes all the sides Lateral surface area excludes top and bottom sides. If not satisfied then see the video u will understand better
