 These plants grow in dry conditions where water is limited. In dry regions all plants not con­fined to the sides of streams or lakes are considered xerophytes whereas in the regions of high rainfall, xerophytes would likely be represented only by some shallow-rooted plants in light sandy soils, by the vegetation on dry hill-tops and the cryptogamic flora of lichens, algae and mosses.
