A fertiliser is a chemical compound that is given to a plant to promote growth. Fertilisers usually provide the three major plant nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium). Fertilisers are in general applied to the soil so that the nutrients are absorbed by plants through their roots. Examples: potassium chloride (KCL), potassium nitrate (KNO3) , ammonium phosphate (NH4)3PO4, calcium superphosphate Ca(H2PO4)2 ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), urea CO(NH2)2
