 A floating object displaces its own mass of water so creating an upthrust equal to its weight. (Archimedes principle).  You need to consider density to understand this.
The density of rock ( stone) is several times that of water - so the rock sinks - the water displaced is much less in mass than the mass of the stone.
A large ship is composed mostly of air - the steel is just a shell - so the average density of the ship is less than that of water - so it floats.

A stone sinks because it has more density than water and a ship does not sink because the average density is less than water due to lot of hollow space containing air
