The conflict depicted in the poem is between the emotional and rational self,feelings and education,heart and the mind.The poet admired the guest who arrived at his trough on a hold summer day and while his heart told him that the snake was harmless and should be respected,the voice of education compelled him to throw a log at the snake and kill it.
