Why the particles of sand can not dissolve in water

Sand is mostly silicon dioxide. This has a giant covalent structure so to dissolve the sand, strong covalent bonds must be broken. Water can only separate polar particles, and SiO₂ isn't polar, so water just doesn't have the energy to break all those bonds.
