    Most of the answers given here or the displayed ones are wrong. A nai or barber not Bismillah Khan decided or improved the quality of pungi.

    Aurangzeb has banned the pungi because it has shrill and unpleasant sound. So Bismillah Khan decided to improve on pungi. And later he made 7 holes in the hollow pipe and built like this a shehnai. This was just an improvement on pungi. Shehnai derived its name by that it was first played by a nai (barber) at the mughal court in the front of the shehjada( king) Aurangzeb . So from this it derives its name shehnai.
