let one number be x

then other will be 72-x

it is given that 12x + 5(72-x)=472

12x + 360 -5x= 472

7x = 472 - 360

7x = 112

x = 16

other number is 72 - x = 72 - 16 = 56

therefore, the two numbers are 16 and 56.
