There is ellipses in this line .The poet did smile when she went to the airport to board the flight as she wanted to hide her gloom for separation and she knew that she had some responsibilities which she had to do

Because the poet had nothing to say at that moment.. She knew that eventually she will have to leave her mother and fly to work. She knew that no words can cure the pain of mother which was caused by the separation
