Due to his appearance, way of clothing, simplicity and accompanied by Rajkumar Shukla they thought him to be another farmer The main motive of gandhi was not to get the money back but to make the indian farmers free from fear of britishers and to make them feel that they were not alone . Also this hurt the feeling of superiority of britishers which was main for making india free

2.this happened because gandhiji's main agenda was not only the monetary compensation but to let british landowners kneel down on their knees and to sacrifice their prestige....and to show indian that these people can also be defeated who were otherwise considered unquestionable.
