The chapter gives the message of importance of one's native language . In the chapter , france was defeated by Germany , then an order from berlin came . According to the order , only german would be imposed on the french district of Alsace and lorraine . This order was a thunderclap to Franz and many other people like the villagers . They at the end came to know about the importance of french language .
