During this phase , the raptured Graafian follicle get converted into corpus luteum that secretes large amount of progesterone that in turn will maintain the endometrial layer of uterus . But if the ova is not fertilized the corpus luteum formed will degenerate leading to the breakdown of endometrium thereby initiating the menstrual phase of next menstrual cycle
