The -ve sign of energy means that the energy of the electron in the atom is lower than the energy at rest of a free electron . A free electron at rest is an electron that is at sufficiently far away from the nucleus and its energy is asumed to be zero . As the electron moves closer to the nucleus due to electrostatic forces , energy is released .so , mathematically , its energy goes on to decrease from zero which leads to its negative value . It also indicates that electron is bound to nucleus and hydrogen is in stable state .
