It is a large network of of membrane bound tubes and sheets. The ER is of two types : rough ER and smooth ER . The rough ER contains ribosomes on its surface whereas the smooth ER does not contains ribosomes on its surface. The ER helpes in transport of materials between various regions of the cytoplasm. It serves as the cytoplasmic framework providing a surface for some of the biochemical activities of the cell. It also functions as the manufacturing surface in a cell .
