Meiosis in oogenesis is different from that of spermatogenesis in being unequal. Unequal division is required to retain the major part of the cytoplasm. Only a minor part is separated as polar body. Only single functional daughter cell called ovum is formed but in spermatogenesis, all the four spermatids are functional. Formation of a single ovum with all essential biochemical ensures proper development of embryo.
