Imparfait is used as a past tense (referring to events in the past ) to -
1. describe events in the past .. for example, I went to Paris , it was magnificent.
Je suis allé à paris , c’était magnifique.
Imaparfait is used to highlight that the city was magnificent. (description)
Imparfait is also used to highlight habitude in the past. example -
During summers, I used to swim in the local swimming pool.
Pendant les étés, je faisais la natation dans la piscine locale.(Swimming is a regular activity or habit that I did in summers.)
