John was hypocritical because he did the same which he opposed. He didn't like the plot of best seller as according to him a man marries a girl belonging to same background but in his real life he married to Jessie who was an aristocrat.

John is a hypocrite because in the beginnning he didn't agreed that a marriage between upper class and lower class was possible and that the things which we read in novels and stories are just an imagination they are not true for real life. But in the end when the writer compared John's life and the travelyan's life , he found out that their lives are almost same and then he agreed that novels and stories are not only related to imagination but most of the time they are based on real life.
