Humus - the organic constituent of soil, usually formed by the decomposition of plants and leaves. In most soil, the humus ranges from 2-10 percent, whereas it is up to 90 percent in peat bog.
The humus content is often determined after calculating the soil’s water content. The weighed dry soil sample is heated strongly so that the humus burns away. The loss of mass is the mass of humus that was burnt away.
