Pro-rata in its accounting sense means to allot shares to all the applicants applying for a category of shares. For example if 2 people have applied for 2000 shares when the company has issued for subscription only 1000 shares, on pro rata allotment, instead of allotting 1000 shares to only one person, the company allots shares to both the persons proportionally i.e 500 to each. This implies that each person who applies for a company's shares gets some allotment. And the excess money received on application(for which allotment is not done) is adjusted towards further calls.
