i can clear it for you but this defination is not supposed to be written in exams. mac address uniquely identify your device in a "Local network" it has no significance in the public network its like you ip Address in local network . its visible in local network but unaccessible in public network that is internet

In computer networking,a Media Access Control address(MAC) is a unique identifier assigned to most network adapters or Network Interface Cards(NICs)by the manufacturer for identification. It is a six byte code and is separated by colon. Ex- 217:23:49:40:67:179. If you will right this then also u will get the marks.

In a local area network (LAN) or other network, the MAC (Media Access Control) address is your computer's unique hardware number. (On an Ethernet LAN, it's the same as your Ethernet address.) When you're connected to the Internet from your computer (or host as the Internet protocol thinks of it), a correspondence table relates your IP address to your computer's physical (MAC) address on the LAN.
