He is a hypocrit because he does not follow what he says. He does not like stories of best sellers because they are very unrealistic. But his own life is just like a best seller. He set his eyes on Jessie and follows her and forgets about his business. Also at the end he stops at coke town to fetch some petunias for Jessie.

The word hypocrite means the person tries to shows what he is not. John is such type of man. He said that he did not believe in the romance portrayed in best sellers.Thus he may be hypocrite.
