R.E.M Wheeler was a director general of ASI. Unlike John Marshall , he recognised the necessity to follow the stratigraphy of the mound rather than dig mechanically along uniform horizontal lines , also he being an ex-army brigadier brought with him a military precision in his work of archaeology
