Ernst Haeckel formulated ' biogenetic law'or 'recapitulation theory' which states states that ' ontogeny repeats phylogeny' that is developmental stages through which  an organism passes (ontogeny) repeats the evolutionary history of the group( phylogeny) to which it belongs.
