A register is a temporary storage area built into a CPU. The instruction register fetches instructions from the program counter (PC) and holds each instruction as it is executed by the processor. The memory registers are used to pass data from memory to the processor. The main difference between register and main memory is that a register is a small and fast storage inside the CPU that holds data temporarily while the main memory is a storage component in the computer that stores data and programs currently used by the CPU. A register is a high-speed memory location in the CPU.

A central processing unit (CPU), also called a central processor, main processor or just processor, is the electronic circuitry within a computer that executes instructions that make up a computer program. The definition of CPU stands for central processing unit, which is the control center of a computer. An example of a CPU is the part of a computer in control of all its functions. A central processing unit (CPU) is an important part of every computer. The CPU sends signals to control the other parts of the computer, almost like how a brain controls a body. The CPU is an electronic machine that works on a list of computer things to do, called instructions.
