Register memory is the smallest and fastest memory in a computer. It is not a part of the main memory and is located in the CPU in the form of registers, which are the smallest data holding elements. A register temporarily holds frequently used data, instructions, and memory address that are to be used by CPU.

A register is a temporary storage area built into a CPU.  The instruction register fetches instructions from the program counter (PC) and holds each instruction as it is executed by the processor. The memory registers are used to pass data from memory to the processor. The main difference between register and main memory is that a register is a small and fast storage inside the CPU that holds data temporarily while the main memory is a storage component in the computer that stores data and programs currently used by the CPU. A register is a high-speed memory location in the CPU.
