that was a great question so, I searched it out on google and this is what I got....

It could be east and west, or plus and minus, positive and negative, left and right, black and white. The point is, they're opposites.

A magnet is a material in which all of its particles are aligned in the same direction. Take iron for example, in a typical piece of iron the particles are not aligned and point in every which direction. For an iron magnet, the particles are in alignment (negative side pointing one way and positive side pointing another, a magnet is created. The reason the term north and south is used it because a magnet will line it self up with the earth's magnetic field pointing North and South. This is where the term North and South pole on a magnet came from. If the magnetic field were pointing east and west when these terms were created I'm sure that we would be saying a magnet has east and west poles.
