Understanding the material is important while studying syllabus. Read all topics and attempt questions based on them . Then first mark those topics which you didn't understand in the first reading. Then mark those topics which you thought you understood but on attempting questions you found that actually you didn't. Then look for an easier explanation to these topics from other sources and or take help from teachers and friends. If you are just behind only in terms of memorizing the topics /points then read ,write and do continuous revision. After each revision even if you don't remember everything a chunk will be left in a piece of your mind and finally you will remember most of the things.
