According to this circuit,four resistance R1,R2,R3 &R4 are connected in form of parallelogram.In one diagonal of parallelogram a galvanometer is connected to detect the presence of current while in other diagonal,a source of emf is connected.Now,if resistance in the four arms of parallelogram are adjusted in such a way that on sending the current in the bridge by the cell,galvanometer shows no deflection, then the bridge is said to be balanced.In balanced condition,the ratio of resistance in any two adjacent arms of the bridge is equal to the ratio of the resistance present in remaining two adjacent arms.

If there are lots of resistance and we want to replace all of them by a single resistance then that single resistance is called equivalent of all resistance
