mirage is formed due to total internal reflection. During hot summer days the air near the ground becomes warmer and as we go up air becomes cooler.So what actually happens, we know that cooler air is denser than warmer air when light from sun fall on any object say tall tree then it goes on refracting from denser to rarer medium and at a point near the gound light gets totaly reflected due to which actually reflection takes place near the ground but not on it so we see a virtual image just above the ground or in other words mirage is formed
