The six characteristics of the Panama Canal are as follows :
(i)Panama canal connect the Atlantic Ocean in the east and Pacific Ocean in the west.
(ii)Panama canal has been constructed across the Panama isthmus.
(iii)About 8 km of area on either side of the Panama canal, is owned by the U.S. government.
(iv)It has reduced the distance between the eastern and the western coast of North and South America.
(v)The canal has lock system. Ships cross different level of canal through three locks, prior entering to the Gulf of Panama.
(vi)It has reduced the distance between New York (east) and San Francisco (West) by 13,000
km through Panama Canal.

(i)Growth is quantitative and value
neutral.
(i)Development means a qualitative change which is always value positive.
(ii)It may have positive or negative sign.
(ii)It means that development cannot take place unless there is an increment or addition to the existing conditions.
(iii)This means that the change may be
either positive or negative.
(iii)Development occurs when positive growth take place. It occurs when there is a positive change in quality.
Example: If the population of a city grows from one lakh to two lakhs over a period of time, we say the city has grown.
However, if the facilities like housing, provision of basic services and other characteristics remain the same then this
growth has not been accompanied by development.

(i) Rural settlements in the developing countries are large in number and poorly equipped with infrastructure.
(ii) Supply of water to rural settlements in developing countries is not adequate. People in villages, particularly in mountainous and arid areas have to walk long distances to fetch drinking water.
(iii) The general absence of toilet and garbage disposal facilities cause health related problems.
(iv) The design and use of building materials of houses vary from one ecological region to another. The houses made up of mud, wood and thatch, remain susceptible to damage during heavy rains and floods, and require proper maintenance every year.
(v) Unmetalled roads and lack of modern communication network creates a unique problem.

1.Immigration means movement of people to a country and emigration means movement of people from a country.
2.Immigration can be called as moving into a country and emigration as moving out of a country.
3.An immigrant is one who migrates to a nation and emigrant is one who migrates away from his home country.
4.Immigration is Latin immigrare that means ‘to go into’. Emigration comes from Latin emigrare, which means ‘to move’.
5.Immigration and emigration have the same meaning ‘moving into’ but are opposed to each other in direction.
6.Though there are specific laws for immigration and emigration, the former is very strictly controlled by the host nations, as they are much concerned about their own citizens.

(i) Primary Sector (or Agriculture sector). It includes all those economic activities which are connected with extraction and production of natural resources, e.g., agriculture, fishing, mining, etc.
(ii) Secondary Sector (or Industrial sector). It includes all activities which are concerned with the processing materials which have already been extracted at the primary stage, e.g., the mining of iron ore is primary industry, but manufacture of steel is secondary industry.
