The government was baffled when they realized that Gandhiji was able to gather a huge number of peasants and lawyers to support him in the fight against injustice. He disobeyed not only the orders of the authority to leave Champaran but also defied the court ruling to submit bail for interim period of recess. His act of Civil Disobedience became successful when the case was dropped without any action. Gandhiji proved the power of mass movement and that people have become aware of their rights and are self-reliant to raise their voice against injustice.

Jack feels that he has been caught in an ugly middle position physically, emotionally as well as mentally. The woodwork, a cage of mouldings and rails and skirting boards all around them was half old tan and half new ivory.
He was conscious of his duties as a father and as a husband. Little Bobby was already asleep. His efforts to make Jo fall asleep proved quite fatiguing. She kept on interrupting him, asking for clarifications, pointing errors and suggesting alternatives.
Jack did not like that women should take anything for granted. He liked them to be apprehensive. So, he extended the story, though he was in a haste to go down stairs and help his pregnant wife in her hard work of painting the woodwork. The result of the extension to the story proved unfruitful and unpleasant for Jo, Jack and Clare. Jo wanted him to change the ending of the story. Clare complained that he had told a long story. Jack felt utter weariness and did not want to speak with his wife or work with her or touch her. He was really caught in an ugly middle pisition.

The prisoner was made to row to a nearby island where no one lived. All the necessary things were given to him. He was dressed in Japanese clothes and his hair was covered with a black cloth. He was told to signal two flashes if he ran out of food. When Dr Sadao received no signal, he was convinced the prisoner had escaped safely. Dr. Sadao had also advised him to wait for Korean boats to take help.
