JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE EARTH Points to Remember Summary The writer visited Antarctica, the coldest, driest and windiest continent in the world, aboard the Russian research vessel, Akademik Shokalskiy. The journey, beginning at Chennai, passed through many areas, geographical, legal, ecological and temporal. The writer’s first reaction to the continent was of relief, followed by wonder at its vastness, seclusion and geological history. Part of History Before human evolution, Antarctica was part of a huge tropical landmass called the Gondwana land, which flourished 500 million years ago. Biological (flora and fauna), geological (changing continents) and geographical (climatic)changes occurred and Antarctica separated and moved away evolving into what it is today. A visit to Antarctica gave the writer a deeper understanding of fold mountains, the earth’s history, ecology and environment. The writer felt unsettled in two weeks time not only because she came from a much hotter place, but also because all features of human civilization were absent from an already desolate landscape. The long summers, the silence broken occasionally by cracking ice sheets and avalanches, the blue whales and ice bergs, all contribute to an ecological implication that the future for humans isn’t good. Human Impact Humans, who are known to have existed for a mere 12000 years, have caused tremendous impact and played havoc with nature. Population explosion, putting a strain on available resources, carbon emissions, fossil fuels and global warming have all resulted in climatic and ecological imbalances that have also affected Antarctica. Antarctica, though unpopulated, has been affected and there are concerns for its half a million year old carbon records trapped under its ice sheets.

The Governor of the HM Prison, Oxford, appears to be a kind-hearted and generous human being. He arranges for an O-level exam for a prisoner, who is renowned for his ability to escape. He was, though, quite skeptical of Evans and took every necessary precaution to make sure that Evans had no means to escape. He was just and a fair person. He complied with Evans' requests despite his misgivings.
He was also very proud and self-conscious. He did not want Evans to disgrace him by escaping from his prison. He had a sharp presence of mind, which was clear from the fact that he cross-checked every call that was made to the prison that day. However, he got over-confident of his arrangements and somehow underestimated Evans. He was quite intelligent. he could trace Evans back again at Golden Lion hotel but he believed in others easily which gave Evans a chance to escape to escape in front of him.
Also, he was a person who does not mind showering praise on a prisoner. When Evans revealed his secret plan to him, he admired him. He was a simple man and didn't realize the extent of deception, However, at last, he proved to be just another gullible Governor when Evans tricked him again and successfully escaped. His overconfidence and self-praise let him down.

She is very kind n generous. She succeeded to persuaded the peddler to stay with them . Miss Edla has a deep insight into human psychology. She easily understands why the paddler was so reluctant to accompany her .she tells the paddler that he may leave them just as freely as he comes . She wanted to have someone with them on Christmas. Thus shows that she was not only generous but highly religious also . When her father was determined to expel the peddler from his house , it was Edla who did not let him go . It shows her sympathetic nature.

It will be better if u read the poem...but if u asking this question then I m giving a simple answer of it...=> According to the poem, the first 3 para ...shows the conditions of the slum childrens...the way of living , the environment around them, etc..but in the third para, the poet shows a type of conclusion by which these slum children may get a proper life....? Yes.. This story is telling us the importance of language and impact of war on the life of people. Character: Franz :is a boy who don't love to go to schl much and as in the story,, at beginning it is told that he was in great dread of scholding as he didn't completed his h.w. M.hamel:french teacher was very Cranky. According to him french is the most beautiful and logical language in this world.. Story explains that m. Hamel tells the students of his class that this day is their last day with their mother language and from tmrw u all will be learning German these words were like thunder clap to Franz. For this reason at that day some villagers come to schl and sat at the back benches to pay tribute to m. Hamel for his 40 years of service towards schl. As class continues there was a Stangerness surrounding the schl, every one was sincerely studying. At last francz wonders will German's be able to make the peigeons to coo in Germany....
