Poem:
But now it was all so still! I had counted on the commotion to get to my desk without being seen; but, of course, that day everything had to be as quiet as Sunday morning.
Word Meaning:
counted on: depended upon
commotion: noise and confusion
Explanation:
That day was unusual as there was no such sound coming out of the school and it seemed that the school was closed as it used to be on a Sunday morning. Franz had planned that he would take cover under the commotion and reach the class without being noticed but that did not seem possible.

In Percy Bysshe Shelly’s poem Ozymandias, there is an overriding irony presented to show the difference between the sculptor and sculpture.
The poem’s irony revolves around Ozymandias himself. The great irony here was having the pharaoh narrate the poem, boasting of all his greatness and power, yet all that he has ‘established’ now lies in ruins, crumbling through time, slowly joining the surrounding sands. Ozymandias was full of authority, even though there was nothing left of what he boasts. His kingdom and his glory now lie in the sands with only stone slabs.

Jack feels that he has been caught in an ugly middle position physically, emotionally as well as mentally. He is unable to run away from the harsh realities of his life, rather he has to accommodate himself in accordance with the prevailing conditions. He is conscious of his duties, both as a father and as a husband. Jack is divided into two difficult situations. His efforts to make Jo fall asleep prove quite fatiguing. She keeps on interrupting him, asking for clarifications, pointing errors and suggesting alternatives. Jo is dissatisfied with the ending of the story. Jack is unable to satisfy her and put her to sleep. On the other hand, his wife Clare is doing the work of painting the living room. She is pregnant. Jack does not like that woman should take anything for granted. He likes them to be apprehensive. So he extends the story and Clare complains that he has told a long story due to which he could not help Clare. Jack feels utter weariness and does not want to speak to his wife or work with her or even touch her. He is really caught in an ugly middle position.
