“This was a new phase, just this last month, a reality phase.” What do you learn about Jo’s reality phase? How did her parents try to convince her?
Ans. Jo would ask if the magic spells were real. When Jack told her that spiders ate bugs, she would turn to her mother and ask if that was really so. When Clare told her God was in the sky and all around them, she would turn to her father to know the reality. Jack tried to convince her by saying? “They’re real in stories.”

If we view the story very deeply we can come across two types of moral issues. One is regarding the proper understanding of the infants feelings and their pains as well as whims. The story under our purview presents that Roger Skunk smells too bad to play and enjoy with other animals. He is badly hurt and fails to stay in the company of his friends. With the advice of a wise owl, he seeks the help of a Wizard who gets his smell changed.

Thus Roger Skunk feels elated with the friend but the Mommy of Roger Skunk does not like. She takes the baby Skunk to the Wizard and hits on the head who in turn changes Roger Skunk to the original smell. Finding the baby in the original condition Mommay hugs and shows affection. Here Jo does not like this type of behaviour on the part of Snunk's mother. She wants that the Wizard should hit mommy. On the other side, Roger Skunk faces racial segregation. He smells bad. It is not his fault. But the other animals of the forest do not come near them and refuse to play. They call him “Roger, Stinky Roger.” The pain becomes so unbearable that tears roll over his cheeks. The Wizard changes his smell and other animals start playing and like his company. But the mother gets him changed to the original smell. Thus in the world of children, ugliness and hatred have no place. It is pure in every respect. We as human being, should follow this.

The various messages conveyed by the story are:
(1) World is full of distractions i.e. is a rattrap and one who gets distracted, gets caught in the rattrap.
(2) The light of kindness can remove the darkness of cruelty and negativity

The theme of the story is that most human beings are prone to fall into the trap of material benefit. However, every human being has an essential goodness that can be awakened through understanding and love. A human being has the tendency to redeem himself from dishonest ways.
The theme is developed with the help of the metaphor of the rattrap. The peddler of rattraps calls the world a big rattrap. The material benefits like riches and joys, shelter and food, heat and clothing are temptations that that allure a person to fall into the rattrap of the world exactly as the bait of cheese and pork attract a rat to fall into the rattrap. Once someone takes the bait, the world closes in on him and then everything is lost.
The peddler is tempted by the thirty kronors of the old crofter. He steals the money. Now he is afraid of being caught and moves through the woods. It is the kind, sympathetic, loving and generous treatment given by Edla Willmansson that helps him get himself free from the rattrap of the world.

Charley quoted this statement. A waking dream wish fulfilment is what we wish to happen or see. It’s not the reality. He told this to Sam, his psychiatrist. While talking about the third level, Charley quoted this statement. He is an Escapist. He couldn’t bear all the tensions happening around him. He said this out of his Imagination.

On the other hand, the boy was to recite on “Participles” but he did not know even the first word of “Participles.” Naturally, Franz was in great fear.

The terror of water followed Douglas wherever he went. To get rid of it, he made a strong determination. He decided to overcome his fear through his will power. He engaged an instructor who would perfect him in swimming. The instructor first helped him drive away his fear, and then gave him many exercises besides teaching him how to exhale and inhale in water.

The practice went on for months together, during which his fear came back to haunt him, but his desire and firm will made him persist in his efforts. It was only through sheer determination and diligence that Douglas could not only counter his terror, but also became an expert swimmer.

He swam across and back large distances to ensure that his fear of water did not return. Hence, desire, determination and diligence succeeded in removing his fear of water.

When Edla saw peddler for the first time time she noticed that he was scared. She thinks that either he had stolen something or had escaped from the jail.

Gaurav Seth 5 years, 4 months ago

Edla has always thought the peddler to be a poor, homeless tramp and didn’t feel cheated when his true identity was revealed. Instead, she felt very bad for him and pleaded on his behalf as she and her father had promised him Christmas cheer.

Hi
1. The first written public examinations were introduced over 2,000 years ago with the establishment of the imperial examination system in 606 AD in China. By the middle of the 19 th century, competitive examinations had been introduced in Britain and India to select government officials. Public examination in schools have a shorter; but still considerable, history. 2. At present, the examination system in India in characterised by heterogeneity. They differ in their vintage, organisational design, financial stability, autonomy, organisational culture and credibility. For instance, the National Institute of Open Schooling is unique in conducting exams through the distance mode; the Indian School Certificate Examination confines itself to only private schools; and the West Bengal Board of Madrasa Education is for Islamic educational institutions only. In a situation where public funds are involved, the equity, efficiency and transparency of this expenditure need to be assessed to ensure that the taxpayers’ money is being spent with due care and concern. The Amrik Singh report (1997) on reorganising boards wondered, “Can there also be a system whereby it becomes possible to grade and categorise the boards in respect of how efficiently and honestly examination are organised?” 3. To do so, a set of parameters were chosen to measure effectiveness, quit, transparency and economic efficiency of the functioning of these organisations. These include indicators like cost incurred per students, fee charged per student, number of examinees per employee and number of affiliated schools per employee. An analysis was made of the boards chosen on the basis of these parameters. The functioning of a total of 20 boards was analysed in terms of 18 performance indicators in 2005. 4. The data collected from the states shows that most boards have an operating surplus. However, the boards seem to be more sensitive to the needs of the disabled. All of them have some special provisions for such candidates. While these provisions vary widely in scope, most provide for a longer duration of examination, concessions in the examination of languages. The CBSE, along with the Maharashtra board, seem to fare the best.

However, when storms destroy all that they had, they migrate to India where he works in a tea stall to earn his living. He also has to run several errands for his owner.
