The poem is a forceful expression of the evils of patriarchy. Aunt Jennifer's ringed fingers give us a clear picture as we realise that not only her finger is ringed but the difficulties in her life will continue to surround her. Even after death she has to conform to the customs of this society. The society and gender roles control her just as she used to control her needlework. These things never change and Aunt Jennifer will have to bear the weight to her grave.

The point of dispute in this poem concerns the constraints of married life and the trials and tribulations a woman has to face by virtue of her marriage. The massive weight of the wedding ring and the toil of married life sits heavily on a woman because she seems to be tied to her husband mentally. Her life is not her own, she becomes known as someone's wife or mother. It is her independent identity as a woman which is at stake.  Aunt Jennifer's character brings out the pathos of her situation, she is a woman who has lost her identity as an independent woman due to her marriage. She was a married woman first and foremost. Aunt Jennifer's death signifies that she can only attain freedom in death because as long as she lives she will continue to have her identity subservient to that of her husband.

The speaker in the poem seems to be a female cousin of Aunt Jennifer because the person refers to her as aunt. The speaker seems to be quite sensitive to the situation that her aunt is in which leads me to draw the conclusion she is also a woman who understands that her identity of a woman is important to her and cannot be subsumed to anyone else's identity, not even that of her husband's.

The title, 'Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers' is appropriate as it suggests that the poem is about Aunt Jennifer’s knitted tigers. With their chivalrous, ferocious, bright and carefree attitude, she creates an alternate world for herself. The tigers are the only means of free expression in her life, which is otherwise burdened by fear and struggles of the married life.

(a) The tigers are called Aunt Jennifers tiger as they are knitted by her. With their chivalrous, ferocious, bright and carefree attitude, she creates an alternate world for herself.

(b) Aunt Jennifers tigers are described as ferocious, fearless, always harmful, sleek and chivalric.

(c) The tigers are depicted as brave, strong, confident and happy. They are fearless beings and the presence of men does not scare them at all. Contrarily, Aunt Jennifer is burdened by a life which, most probably, others chose for her.

(d) The word “chivalric” refers to the confidence of the tigers about their power and brevity in their actions.

A. Aunt Jennifer has been enslaved by the wedding ring. After undergoing the harsh and bitter experiences of her married life, she feels weak and shaken.

B. Her death is symbolic of her complete submission to the suppression. The male-dominated society seems to show no concern for Aunt Jennifer’s suffering, or even her death. The society seems in no way affected by it.

C. ‘Ringed with ordeals’ refers to the wedding band. Ring here symbolises handcuff which enslaves her all her life and makes her a frightened and scared soul.

D. The tigers will go on prancing proud and unafraid

A. Aunt Jennifer is weaving tigers on the panel. Her hands are moving about her wool. She is finding the needle quite hard to pull. The weight of years of her married life is lying heavy on her hand. This makes the pulling of the neddle so hard.

B. Because Aunt Jennifer’s fingers are Trainbling. Aunt Jennifer is afraid of her husband/ Aunt Jennifer is under a state of mental suppression.

|C.  It suggests the weight of the harsh and tough experience of Aunt Jennifer’s married life. The image is quite suggestive. The wedding band is symbolic. It represents the unbreakable bond of marriage between the husband and the wife.

D. Aunt Jennifer is working with ivory needles and wool. But she can’t move her fingers freely in the wool. She finds it hard to pull even the ivory needles easily. The experiences
of her past married life are quite bitter. She has unpleasant memories of her married life with her husband. The heavy weight of the wedding band sits heavily upon her hand.

Even after Aunt Jennifer’s death the tigers in the panel can’t run away. They are made by Aunt Jennifer by her fine design work with her wool. The tigers will go on jumping proud and unafraid as before. Unlike aunt Jennifer, her tigers are immortal and fearless. Even after her death, the tigers made by her will continue to prance across the screen and will live on. The tigers will not die and go to the grave with a band resting upon their fingers which would remind them of the duties. The tigers will remain free and bold even after aunt Jennifer's death. They will continue to be the symbol of aunt Jennifer's contrasting self.

Aunt Jennifer’s wedding band lies heavily on her hand. It reminds her of her unhappy married life. It is symbolic of male authority and power of her husband who had suppressed her and made her a nervous wreck. He had dominated over her for so long that she had lost her identity.

Seemapuri is still in wilderness but it is no longer empty. In 1971 it was inhabited illegally by more than 10,000 rag-pickers from Bangladesh in 1971. It is on the periphery of Delhi yet it is miles away from it metaphorically. People live in structures of mud, with roofs of tin and tarpaulin. It is devoid of sewage, drainage and running water. They have got ration cards for votes and buying grains. They have no identity. Women move in tattered saris. Survival in Seemapuri means rag-picking.

Aunt Jennifer’s tigers were created in the panel by her own hands. They appeared to be prancing (jumping) across a screen. They looked sleek. They were bright like yellow topaz. They were majestic and courageous. They didn’t fear the men beneath the tree. They paced in ‘chivalric certainty’.

After becoming late in his office, Charley went to Grand Central to reach home early. There he entered in a tunnel that ended in a corridor. The corridor turned left and slanted downward. Charley went on walking and reached a flight of stairs that took him to another level of the station. It was the Third Level even quite different from other two levels.

The third level symbolizes man's innermost and deepest desire to escape from the world full of tension, war, insecurities and fear etc.
He knew by the dim gas lamps, brass spittoons ,old styled clothing of men and women , moustaches and string watches , Charley came to know that he had reached the 1894 world .

Definitely one can see an intersection of time and space in the story “The Third Level” since the story is constantly moving between the past and the present. Charley is an ordinary man of thirty-one years old. He wears a tan gaberdine suit and a straw hat with a fancy band. He lives and works in an office in New York. This city is full of insecurities, fear, war, worries, stress and tension. People feel unsafe and troubled so that they want to escape.

The Third Level at Grand Central Station is a medium of an easy escape for Charley. It is nothing but a ‘waking-dream-wish-fulfilment.’ At the Third Level, one can see flickering gas lights, spittoons, beards, side bums and fancy mustaches of 1894. There Charley glimpses a very small Currier and Ives Locomotive with a funnel-shaped stack. There the tickets are available in old currency. Charley returns and arranges for the old-style bills. He decides to go to Galesburg using the Third Level. But he can never find the Third Level again. So there is a lot of intersection of space and time at the story. Further one can note that Galesburg is a place where people live in big old frame houses having huge lawns and tremendous trees. This is clear cut contrast of modern world of New York with Galesburg.

Sam's letter from the third level-Galesburg, July 18, 1894-to Charley read that initially, he had only hoped that Charley was right about the third level but now, he believed It. He had found the third level and had been there for two weeks. The third level was peaceful, hospitable, and welcoming. He wanted Charley and Louisa to join him there and wanted them to keep looking till they found it.   The letter brought out the difference between the tranquil pre-World War era and the tension- ridden world of the present. Then there was warmth, hospitality, and simple pleasures. The clean carefree environment reflected the mood of the people. It was like paradise as compared to the insecure and worrisome life that one led later. Despite the material advantage, one would gladly exchange the current life for that life.

Charley had asked for two tickets to old Galesburg in 1894's time. When he tried to pay the fare, the clerk thought he was using a counterfeit currency or trying to cheat him, as Charley had modern currency note those were totally different from 1894's notes. Then he fled back.
Next day he went to a coin collector and bought old currency from him. But he could not make way to Galesburg as he couldn't find the corridor to third level again. So, he couldn't reach to Galesburg.

The story the third level is written by Jack Finney. The ending of the story is quite sad which explains the psychiatric conditions of Charley who kept imagining throughout the story that he received letters from his friend Sam regarding the discovery of the third level of the building.

Charley knew that there were only two levels at Grand Station. In his fantasy he visited the Third Level as well. There he felt a strange mystery of 1894. Therefore, he consulted a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist thought that Charley had been day-dreaming. Side by side he revealed that the third level was still there. In reality Charley got upset with his dull life. It made him rush back from the third level.

When a new stamp is issued, the stamp collectors buy that stamp and use them to the envelops on the very first day of the sale. Thenew stamp gets the post mark and the date. This is called the “first day cover”. The receiver never opens it because he knows that he has himself just put a blank paper in it. Charley found this type of cover in his stamp-collection.

Charley argued that his grandfather lived in nice and peaceful times, yet he was the one . who had started the stamp collection. He did not need any “temporary refuge from reality”. He added that President Roosevelt collected stamps too.

Governor, inspector and visitor are important and powerful persons in the modem times. The poet invokes them to help the miserable slum children. They are expected to perform an important role in removing social injustice and class inequalities. They can abridge the gap between the two worlds—the beautiful world of the great and rich and the ugly world of slums.
