The poet, Kamala Das, is on her way to the airport at Cochin, accompanied by her old mother. Suddenly, she realises that her mother has grown old. Her face appears ashen-weak like that of a corpse. This thought disturbs her as it makes her realise the fact of her mother’s approaching death. As a daughter, the thought of losing her mother disturbs her and in order to drive away from her worrying thoughts, she starts looking out at the trees which appears to be sprinting as they move ahead. She also sees young children rushing out of their homes to play outside. This reminds her of youth and beauty. On the contrary, her mother is aging. She has become old and is moving towards death. This fills her with a feeling of insecurity. In contrast to the young children and green trees, the mother has lost her youth and charm and has become pale like the winter’s moon. The poet feels the same old pain and fear of her childhood as she bids goodbye to her mother at the airport, but she hides all such emotions with a smile which consoles her mother that she would return soon. So even when the poet herself is full of fear of old age, her smile gives her mother the hope of survival. Hope It Helps You?

The story is narrated by a French boy, Franz. He is lazy but sensitive and likes to play. He dislikes studying French and hates his teacher M. Hamel. After overpowering their districts of Alsace and Lorraine in France, Berlin has ordered that German language instead of French be taught in the schools there. It is the last day of their French teacher M. Hamel, who has been there for forty years. He is full of grief, nostalgia and patriotism. As a mark of respect to his hard work, the village men also attend his ‘last lesson’. They are sad as they did not learn their mother tongue, French in their childhood. Franz is shocked to know that it’s his last lesson, as he does not know French. Now, suddenly, he gets interested in learning it and understands everything taught on that day. He develops an instant liking for the teacher, M. Hamel and respects him for his sincerity and hard work. He feels sad at departing from him and is ashamed for not being able to recite the lesson of participles. M. Hamel tells them that they all are at fault for not being eager enough to learn, putting it off to the next day. He blames himself for not teaching them sincerely. His patriotism is reflected in his praise for the French language as being the most beautiful and most logical language in the world. He tells the class to guard their language, as being close to one’s language is the key to escape from the prison of slavery. It will help them in getting free from the Germans. They realize the importance of learning their mother tongue and that they have been defeated by the Germans because of their illiteracy. Franz feels that it is not possible to take away one’s language from a person as it is natural to each being, may it be the “coo” to the pigeons or “French” to the Frenchmen. Hope It Helps You?

The story ‘Indigo’ highlights the unequal economic system that existed during colonial British rule. It resulted in Indian peasants suffering, while the British planters exploited them. It also highlights the importance of Gandhi’s decision to take up their case, which exposed the unjust system. Hope It Helps You?

The message conveyed by the story is that it is not impossible to conquer and win over the powerful. If the people get together and fight against injustice, no power in the world can stop them from achieving what they desire.

Jo was no longer a credulous child because she has started to question Jack (her father) & Clare (her mother) about everything that they tell her. She wants to know the truth of everything. For example, when Jack was telling her the story she would ask whether magic spells are real or not; when ne told her that spiders eat bugs, she would turn to her mother and ask do they really; when Clare told her that God was in the sky and all around them, she would turn to her father and ask is he really; and many more.

The poet’s parting words of assurance and her smile provide a stark contrast to the old familiar fear of childhood. Her words and smiles are a deliberate attempt to hide her real feelings. She is trying to hide her fear about her mother’s frail and deteriorating health which might separate her from her mother.

The realisation of French language to those people was suddenly, this is may shows that there is love and affection in their hurt to their language as well as to their country. Learning of German language instead of French language is not acceptable for their soul due to a great respect for their language and country. This is happen because when the order come from Berlin side that only German language should be taught in the school of Alsace and Lorraine, French lessons will demised from the school such that French language almost also be reduced when German language be arrived from the new German teachers.

Gandhiji took steps for social progress. He appealed for young and talented teachers, doctors. Many people like Mahadev Desai and Narhari Parikh joined his movement. Devadas, Gandhiji’s son and Kasturbai, Gandhi’s wife also joined. Several primary schools were opened and people were taught about ashram’s rules. They were made aware on personal cleanliness and community sanitation, by Kasturbai. Thus along with the political and economical upliftment, Gandhiji also tried to solve the problems of social and the cultural backwardness.

The central idea of the poem is ‘aging’ which is the eternal law of nature. Everything has to change one day and therefore the poet has portrayed the constraints of an old age which she found in her mother On this earth whenever a human being is born he/she has to grow up and face different situations that are put in front by life. When a person is young then he/she is full of energy and then old and then one day has to die. During the course of life we meet many people, make friends, many people do leave us. There is a kind of pain we feel when others leave us. This whole poem is concentrated on that pain only.

.The poet also mentions the close relationship which a mother and a daughter share. Everyone has a deep feeling of love for their mother and we are always very worried and tensed. There is a pain deep inside us when we have to leave them. So does Kamala Das feel while going away from her mother who has grown old, and when the poet is going away from her she is deeply saddened. She bids goodbye to her mother with a false and hollow smile on her face and simultaneously she is also feeling guilty that when her mother needs her she is not there.
