    When the ironmaster failed to persuade the stranger to accompany home he sent his daughter Edla Williamansson to bring him home.

    She went to the stranger and lifted his hat and told that she was Edla.
    She said, “I am so sorry captain, that you are having such a hard time.” She looked at him mercifully and assured, that he would be allowed to leave them just as freely as he had come. She requested to stay with them over Christmas Eve. Her friendly manners aroused confidence in the peddler and he accepted his invitation.

    The peddler declined the invitation of the ironmaster to go to his house. He had stolen thirty kronors from the house of the crofter who lived in that area. So the peddler thought that going up to the manor house would be like throwing himself voluntarily into the lion's den.
    He was afraid if the ironmaster would came to know that he is a thief and then the police might arrest him.
    So, he declined the ironmaster's invitation.

    The author met Saheb who was a ragpicker in Seemapuri, a place on the outskirts of Delhi. Saheb was happy being a rag picker. He led a carefree life and appeared like the morning birds and disappeared during noon time. He ran around the street with his friend barefooted. Once he had told the author that there were times when he found a one rupee coin or even a ten rupee note among the heap of garbage. This gave him hope and he would dig more into the garbage to try his luck further. Later, one day when the author met Saheb carrying a steel cannister he came to know that the boy was no more a rag picker. He was working in a tea stall down the road. He was paid 800 rupees and he was given all his meals. But when the author asked whether he liked the job, Saheb's face had lost the carefree look. Though he had money, he lost the freedom that rag-picking gave him. He was no longer his own master. Saheb had traded his liberty in exchange for money. He was surely not happy with his life despite the money that he was being paid. In other words, this change in Saheb's life was comparatively a better one, since he was now working and earning on his own, on the other side of the story, we learn that Saheb himself wasn't very happy with such a change in his life as he thought that his responsibilities as a servant have snatched away the freedom he had when he was just a ragpicker.

    No Tobacco Workshop by Nandita Das New Delhi 2 June 20XX “Most people start smoking at the age of fifteen. About 8-9 lakh people die of tobacco use every year”, said Mrs Kanchan Ghosh, CHO, Pratap Institute. She presided over the ‘No Tobacco’ Workshop as the Chief Guest. The workshop was held at G.B. Institute under the aegis of Anti-tobacco Cell of Delhi Government. Pictures, posters and cartoons depicting the harmful effects of smoking were displayed all along the corridors of the Institute. A skit, directed by Som Dutta, eminent theatre personality, was presented to highlight the miserable plight of tobacco addicts. A panel of experts from the renowned medical institutes of Delhi gave an illuminating discourse on the diseases caused by tobacco consumption, measures taken by the government to check the menace and the proposed ban on films glamorising smoking. A documentary film was also screened showing the plight of patients dying of throat and lung cancer.
