Franz was prepared for the test on participles. The chirping birds and sight of the Prussian soldiers were far more interesting to him than his attending school. That is why he stayed out of the 'doors of the school to bask in nature's glory.'

Vive la franz/Viva la France on the blackboard at the end of his last class in the school. It means- Long live France! He wrote this because he was deeply saddened by the fact that Germans have come in their country and are imposing German language on them. And as it was his last day teaching French to the students and he loved the French language as he believed it was the most beautiful language, he wanted it to live long. He wanted France to live long.

Character of Franz
Franz was a very young boy living in Alsace district of France. He had a layman's attitude to studies. At the beginning we find him feeling tempted to skive his school. However, we also come to know his inner strength of character when he overcomes that temptation.
We come to know his patriotism and love for his teacher after he comes to know about the sad news of the new order according to which teaching of French had to be replaced with German. He is shocked to know that that was M. Hamel's last lesson.
We see him getting remorseful for having ignored learning French. He wants to learn all the French in just one period. He is very sad at the departure of his teacher.

Jack is a very smart father who has an inventive mind of creating stories. The basic line was the same but there was a little variation. Each story described a creature named Roger. He had to manage his family as two children, a daughter Jo and her brother Bobby. The world up stairs in the house consists of his children Jo and Jack. The downside world consists of his wife Clase who is doing the work of painting. Jack is caught in an ugly situation between the romantic world of telling tales to the children and in real world of helping his wife down stairs - Jack is a mature and seasoned person. Even then he tries to serve all in every possible way through his skills, he is a master mind in satisfying the ego of his children. In the story Roger Skunk is the creation of Jack Skunk is a poor little black animal that smelled very bad whenever he goes to play. He can narrate story with the pace and tone of the occasion. Other animals call him “Stinky Skunk”. It feels humiliation and Jo is very unhappy. She feels elated when skunk becomes a good smelling creature. She thinks that Mommy should not hit the wizard but Jack tries to justify what he has done, is the sanctified view. So he has higher level of intelligence than his daughter.
