“We are not Afraid to Die.........” is a first person account of an adventurous ordeal that a family experiences during the voyage. There are three sections of the text. The narration of events matches the mood of the voyage. The first section describes how the voyage began with great hope and fanfare in July 1976. They were attempting to ‘duplicate the round-the-world voyage made 200 years earlier by Captain James Cook. Wavewalker had been professionally built. It was thoroughly tested in the roughest weather. They sailed down to Cape Town. The trouble started only when they left Cape Town. On January 2, the waves were gigantic. The narration of the events mirrors the hectic efforts of the captain and the crew to protect Wavewalker.

The second section : “Search for an Island” describes their struggle for survival for the last 15 hours. On January 4, they ate their first meal in almost two days. But the respite was short lived. This also captures the highly emotional response of the children. Jon declared : "We aren’t afraid of dying if we can all be together—you and Mummy, Sue and I.”

In the last section “Cheerful Landing” the narration shifts back to the relaxed style. The captain was sure to reach lle Amsterdam. Jon gave the good news. The island was in front of them. All the 28 inhabitants were there to cheer and help them ashore.

Douglas went down to the bottom of nine feet deep water for the first time. Nine feet seemed to him like more than ninety feet. He grew panicky. Before, he could touch the bottom, his lungs were about to burst. He felt paralysed. He was buried in the water. His breath was gone and terror overpowered his heart.

Douglas went deep and swallowed water. He was in a sitting position at the bottom. He was frightened but was not out of his wits.

Franz was a boy who lived in the district of Alsace. He studied in one of the schools in Alsace. He was not fond of attending school and studying. He liked the out world more than the environment of the school. Learning French was something he never gave much importance to. He was scared of his French teacher M. Hamel. The time when the people of Alsace came to know that as per the new law, German would be taught in the school in the place of French, he experienced a different feeling for French altogether. Apart from being surprised, he felt sorry for himself for not paying attention while studying French. He was very disappointed and sorry to attend the last lesson of French in his school.

-- "Linguistic Chauvinism is a strong belief that our language is superior to others"- This theme is effectively brought out by the writer Alphouse.

-- The lesson is a comment on Man's desire to rule over & over power those whom he defeated in every sense of the world. After the annexation of France by German. The Germans not only wanted to rule over the French geographically & politically but also wanted to impose their language on them. The Germans suffered from linguistic chauvinism .

-- The victims in the France people were deeply pained at the thought of losing their language. The pain is seen i the very emotional description of the villagers coming to attend the last lesson. It is also been in Franz's last ditch effort to answer his teacher's question to perfection and in Hamel's supreme effort to teach all that he knew in one stroke to his students using all his patience.

-- Within the framework of the story Dandet provides a solution to the problem of linguistic chauvinism through his spokesperson M.Hamel-who teaches people to hold on fast and guard to their language which is the key to their freedom and which symbolizes their identity.

The hazards of working in the glass bangle industry as follows :

Workers in the glass bangle industry have to work in very high temperature around the glass furnaces. They work in dinky cells without air and light. They don't get any daylight. Thus they lose the brightness of their eyes. The Powder from the polishing of bangles also blinds them.

In Firozabad about 20,000 children have to work in glass bangle industry in dark places all day long.

Child labour should be eliminated because it takes away from the child his childhood and the prospect of elementary education. Moreover, since the child labourers are cheap, and consequently engaged in hazardous and dangerous employment, they are often vulnerable to mental and physical illness. Entering the workforce too early diminishes a child's lifetime earning potential. Child laborers have very limited ability to take advantage of educational opportunities that would help them receive better-paying jobs as adults.

The chapter is titled the last lesson because it was M. Hamel's last French lesson in the school. On the last day of school M. Hamel wore his special suit which comprised his beautiful green coat, frilled shirt and a little black silk cap, all embroidered because it was the last lesson that he would deliver. He never wore this attire except on inspection and prize days. He wore this as a mark of respect for the language and culture which is being invaded by the foreigners.
