Humans, unlike cows for ex. don't have the necessary bacteria in their intestines that make the enzymes(cellulases) necessary to breakdown the 1-4 beta glucose bonds. So we cannot break down cellulose into its constituent glucose molecules as we do with starch. No vertebrate can digest cellulose directly.

Adsorption is commonly an essential first step in heterogeneous catalysis. Adsorption is when a molecule in the gas phase or in solution binds to atoms on the solid or liquid surface. The molecule that is binding is called the adsorbate, and the surface to which it binds is the adsorbent. The process of the adsorbate binding to the adsorbent is called adsorption. The reverse of this process (the adsorbate splitting from adsorbent) is called desorption. In terms of catalyst support, the catalyst is the adsorbate and the support is the adsorbent.

The presence of salt (or any electrolyte) in the water accelerates the reaction because it increases the conductivity of water, effectively increasing the concentration of ions in the water and so increasing the rate of oxidation (corrosion) of the metal.
The situation is complicated by the fact that salt dissolved in water actually reduced the amount of dissolved oxygen present in the water. This is because the water molecules are attracted to the dissolved ions from the salt (solvation), which has the tendency to decrease the weak affinity of non-polar oxygen molecules to water, thereby driving dissolved oxygen out. So if the metal is totally submerged in water, higher salt concentrations can actually reduce the rate of corrosion, if the water is not aerated. So it depends upon the amount of oxygen getting into the water and onto the metal.
4Fe+3O2+6H2O⟶4Fe(OH)3
Corrosion (rust) is 'redox' reaction, which means it involves reduction (of oxygen into hydroxide ions) and oxidation (of metallic iron to iron cations).

- Electrolytes can produce ions when they are dissolved in water, but non electrolytes can’t produce ions.
- Ionic compounds and some compounds with polar bonds can be electrolytes. Compounds with non polar bonds are mostly non electrolytes.
- Electrolytesin solutions can conduct electricity contrary to non electrolytes.
