Add Lucas reagent (It is a compound of Anhydrous zinc chloride and conc. HCL) to the unknown given alcohol and then observe the changes.
If you see that that there are no changes then it can be concluded that it is a primary alcohol (Ethanol) .If you see turbidity or cloudiness in the alcohol after 5 minutes then it is a secondary alcohol( propan 2 ol).If you see turbidity immediately after addition of Lucas reagent then it can be concluded the alcohol is tertiary alcohol.
