at cathode reduction take place because ( red cat) red means redox and cat means cathode. so reduction means gain of electrons so ions in solution will gain electrons and get attached to the electrod. on the other hana at anode(an ox) an means anode and ox means oxidation so atoms of anode will change into ions by losing electrons
