In the presence of sulphuric acid (H2SO4), KI produces HI 2KI + H2SO4 → 2KHSO4 + 2HI Since H2SO4 is an oxidizing agent, it oxidizes HI (produced in the reaction to I2). 2HI + H2SO4 → I2 + SO2 + H2O As a result, the reaction between alcohol and HI to produce alkyl iodide cannot occur. Therefore, sulphuric acid is not used during the reaction of alcohols with KI. Instead, a non-oxidizing acid such as H3PO4 is used.

Tanisha Saini 7 years ago

Because h2so4 will oxidise ki to i2 ( as in p block)

Acetophenone and Benzophenone can be distinguish by using iodoform test. However, Benzonphenone does not contain any free methyl group so it will give a negative test. 1) C₆H₅COCH₃ + 3NaOl → C₆H₅COONa+ CH₃ +2NaOH Acetophenone + Sodium Hypoiodite → Sodium Benzate + Iodoform (yellow ppt) 2) C₆H₅COC₆H₅ + NaOl → No yellow ppt of CH₃ Benzophenol + Sodium Hypoiodite → No yellow ppt of CH₃
