Fajan's rule

Sanskriti S 6 years, 9 months ago

as we move from left to right(La+3 to Lu+3),size of ions decreases, so covalent character incrrases and hence basic strength decreases

Suhani Rana? 6 years, 9 months ago

This is because of lanthanoid contraction.as atomic size decreases from La to Lu hence electropositive nature also decreases and so is the basic character

I'm not sure about the answer 'cause uts explanation is not given in any book

Sanskriti S 6 years, 9 months ago

I'm giving two explanations: 1.higher the oxidation state of central ion, larger is the value of CFSE. Generally the central ion are in higher oxidation state(+3,+2,..) in octahedral complex and that in lower oxidation state(0,+2,..) in tetrahedral. 2. In octahedral complex there are six ligands and in tetrahedral, there are only four ligands, so repulsion is higher in octahedral, hence it's CFSE is higher.

Piyush Kumar 6 years, 9 months ago

No. Of ligands are more.

But i don't think that pcl3 is more covalent by the way your welcome

Snehashish Datta 6 years, 9 months ago

It is given in a question paper. Maybe its wrong. Anyways thanks for your help suhani.

Suhani Rana? 6 years, 9 months ago

Hey actually i think your question is wrong because pcl5 is more covalent then pcp3?..because In pcl3 p is in +3 oxidation state and in pcl5 p is in +5 oxidation state so according to fazan rule higher is the oxidation state more will be the covalent character....
