Physical education is a course taught in school that focuses on developing physical fitness.
Objectives of Physical Education are :
- Physical development:- Development of organ systems such as circulatory system, nervous system, muscular system, digestive system etc.
- Mental development:- Physical activities require alertness of mind, deep concentration and calculated movement. This objective is related to the mental development of an individual.
- Social development:- This objective is related to the development of social traits, which are essential for better adjustment in life. it is a better source for attaining the qualities like. Co-operation, fair play, sportsmanship tolerance and sympathy.
- Neuro Muscular Co-ordination:- This objective is centered with a better relationship between nervous system. Education provide ample opportunities of physical neuromuscular coordination.
- Emotional Development:- The emotional development of an individual is also the major objectives of physical education every individual has various types of emotions viz. Pleasure, hope, jealously, hateredness, fear, depression, anger, wonder, lust loneliness etc.
- Development of Health: This develops health related habits through health education. This also provides education about the prevention of communicable disease.

With time the trend of physical education in India is changing. It has gained lots of importance with time and has evolved in itself to new dimensions and platforms.
Along with this the new generation has found new and keen interest in the field of physical education. This is though not a new field and was never untouched by exploration.
With the growing civilization and globalization, the physical education has spread its branches to new direction.
For some it is a mode of entertainment, physical training, body training, body culture, an aspect of healthy living, a significant part of education itself and an evolved dimension of general and much required physical education.
These have now developed as even an important competitive sports activity.

Principles of Adapted Physical Education :
- Students with disabilities require adapted physical education activities to the limit of their capacity, to meet their physical, mental, social and emotional needs.
- Every effort should be made to ensure that the adapted physical education programme is according to the needs and capacities of students.
- The equipment, facilities, rules and instructions of an adapted physical education programme should be modified according to the need.
- The adapted physical education programme should be physically as well as psychologically sound.
- The teacher of physical education should note the anomalies, but should not try to treat the anomalies that need the attention of a medical specialist.
- The activities of adapted physical education should be decided after close coordination with medical staff.
