Let a and d be the first term and the common difference of the A.P. respectively.
It is known that the kth term of an A. P. is given by
ak = a + (k –1) d
∴ am + n = a + (m + n –1) d
am – n = a + (m – n –1) d
am = a + (m –1) d
∴ am + n + am – n = a + (m + n –1) d + a + (m – n –1) d
= 2a + (m + n –1 + m – n –1) d
= 2a + (2m – 2) d
= 2a + 2 (m – 1) d
=2 [a + (m – 1) d]
= 2am
Thus, the sum of (m + n)th and (m – n)th terms of an A.P. is equal to twice the mth term.

Listen do example no.6 and you are thinking in the example that why n=23 because it is not given . Since for 12th term a+11d means that n is there 12 = a +(12 - 1)d = a+11d. So comparing eq. 1 of example 6 then it is 2a +n-1 .d so 11th term is a +11 so by comparing we put in 11th term as 2 and then we do 2.12 - 1 we get 23.
