Taplow narrates the incident about one day when Mr. Crocker Harris made one of his classical jokes in the class which no one understood.
Taplow laughed out of politeness. Instead of feeling thankful, Mr. Crocker Harris asked Taplow to explain the joke to the class.
This incident proved that Mr. Crocker Harris did not like 'being liked'.

She was a very religious woman. When narrator live with her in village. She always feed dogs with stale chapattis. But after coming in city she was unable to feed dogs with chapattis. Because in city there are no dogs.
Also she cannot help the narrator in her studies because she don't know about science and English. She was sad to hear that there was no teaching about God and scriptures in narrator's school. She also think that music was not meant for gentle folk.
But when narrator went to abroad for his further studies. She felt very sad. Now, she spent most of her time by spinning at the wheel and praying. She feed the sparrows in her spare time. When she feed the sparrows they sat on her head, hand etc. and start chapping like they are talking with her.
When the narrator came from the abroad. She felt happy and collect all the women of her neighborhood and start singing the homecoming of warriors. Due to overwork, she developed fever. She told her family members that her end was near. But the doctor said she would recover soon. She don't spend time with her family members, instead she continued praying; till she breathed her last.

The poem is a tribute to the poet’s mother. She is looking at an old photograph of her mother which has a frame of cardboard. The picture has three girls in which the middle one is the oldest and tallest.
It is her mother when she was twelve years old or so. Beside her, on both sides are her two cousins, Betty and Dolly, who are holding her hands and are younger than her. They went for paddling on a beach holiday. Her uncle took the photograph then. The poet could not help but notice her mother’s sweet face. The sea touched her terribly transient feet which depicted that she changed over the years and the sea remained the same.
After twenty-thirty years, her mother would laugh at the photograph. She would make the poet look at the photograph and tell her how their parents would dress them up for the beach holiday. The beach holiday was her mother’s favourite past memories while her laugh was the poet's favourite memory. Both of them lost something which they cherished a lot and yet cannot live that moment again.
Those sweet moments were memories now.
Now, the poet’s mother had been dead for the past twelve years, which is the same number as of her age when the photograph was taken back then. She cannot express the grief that she has from her mother’s absence.

There was not much of a difference between the reaction of the children and the adults when faced with danger. Both showed courage and strength. The children showed a more positive frame of mind. The captain and his crew members tried to save the boat but the impetus given to the captain was from his son who said that he was not afraid to die as long as they were together.

The narrator’s uncle was considered to be a crazy man. Actually, he was the natural descendant of the crazy streak in the family. He was a huge and powerful man. He had a big strong head with black hair. He was a man of furious nature. He was short tempered and of irritable nature. He would not let anybody talk before him. He would stop him shouting. “It is no harm ; pay no attention to it.”

Tut was just a teenager when he died. He was laid to rest in his grave laden with gold and finally forgotten. The tomb was discovered in 1922. The world has been speculating about Tut's fate. Some even did not rule out the possibility of his murder. A CT Scan was done on Tut to offer new clues about his life and death. The other aim was to provide an accurate forensic reconstruction of the young Pharaoh.
The workmen carried Tut from the tomb in his wooden box. They climbed a ramp and a flight of stairs in the sand outside. Then they rose on a hydraulic lift and went into the trailer that held the scanner.
The results of the CT Scan were quite encouraging. 1700 digital X-ray images in cross section were created. A grey head appeared on screen. Neck vertebrae were quite clear. The images of hand, ribcage and skull were equally bright. These revealed that nothing had gone seriously wrong with Tut's body.

Everyone was very sad at the demise of the grandmother. She was lifted off the bed and, as is customary, laid on the ground and covered with a red shroud. After a few hours of mourning the family left her alone to make arrangements for her funeral. In the evening, all over the verandah and in her room right up to where she lay dead and stiff wrapped in the red shroud, thousands of sparrows sat scattered on the floor. There was no chirruping. Everyone felt sorry for the birds and the author’s mother fetched some bread for them. She broke it into little crumbs, the way his grandmother used to, and threw it to them. The sparrows took no notice of the bread. When they carried the grandmother’s corpse off, they flew away quietly.
