In Shirley Toulson's photography, the central idea is change or mutability. A photograph records the past and time. Through the photograph, the poet recalls the time of recent past in present. The speaker speaks about the time when her mother has been dead. The poem recalls the fact of loss of speaker's, mother through a photograph. Furthermore, the poem can be viewed as the little victory over such loss is present. Also, this poem acts as a photograph which preserves the past like a photograph and can never disappear.

There is a lot of difference between the way in which the adults and the children reacted when faced with danger. The adults felt the stress of the circumstances but prepared themselves to face the dangers. They took sufficient precautions to protect the ship when the rough weather began.

When he looked out of the window he couldn't believe his eyes because he saw his cousin Mourad on a magnificent white horse. He could not believe it because he knew that his cousin was not the owner of the horse, because they were poor.

Dear Parminder
May the Guru’s blessings be with you and your family.
I am very happy these days as my grandson, Khushwant, has come to live with me. His parents have gone to the city. The boy will remain with me till they settle down. Khushwant is a serious and an adorable child. He listens intently as I recite my prayers while getting him ready for school. I hope he learns them. I have become busy and my lonely life has acquired meaning. I prepare his wooden slate and take him to school. While he studies, I remain in the temple and read the scriptures, talk to the priest. After school as we return, I feed chapattis to the dogs. Khushwant is delighted when the dogs follow us. I pray that you and your family remain well. With namaskar to your husband and love to your children.
Your sister

"Grandmother" was an old wrinkly woman, who couldn't have grown older. She was short, plump and slightly bent. She always wore a white saari, with silver locks covering her face, due to which the narrator describes her as being a "winter landscape in the mountains". She has a calm, gentle and reassuring face.

The three phases of the author’s relationship with his grandmother before he left the country to study abroad were:
(a) Admiration and friendship – The author admired his grandmother and described her as the “winter landscape in the mountains, an expanse of pure white serenity breathing peace and contentment”. They were good friends. She woke him up in the morning and got him ready for school. She waited for him while he was in school and then walked him back.
(b) Growing distant – She could not accompany him to school as he went by the school bus. He was now in an English school, where they taught science. She could not understand English and did not believe in science. The fact that they were not taught about god made her unhappy. Khushwant Singh’s learning music in school made her unhappier as she felt it was not meant for gentle folk.
(c) Wide gulf – When he went to the university, he got a separate room and even the last link of a shared room was snapped. The grandmother kept to her spinning wheel, rarely talking to anyone.
