This line is extracted from the famous story by Mr. Kushwant Singh- The Portrait of a lady. This is the description of the his grandmother in the story. This lines elaborates the physical attributes of the old lady. The writer in these lines focuses on the face of the lady. This line can be explained as:

The lady's "silver locks" is representative of her old age and experience of a lifetime. So, she gave less attention to form of her hair and did not care about her looks. Moving on, "pale and puckered face" portrays the grandmothers face which was light in complexion and filled with wrinkles. Later, after these lines, the writer calls her grandmother as a "winter landscape in the mountains" which denotes a emotional implication rather than literary.

According to the story " The Portrait of a Lady " by Khushwant Singh, there used to be a huge portrait of his grandfather on the top of the mantelpiece in the drawing room at his native village house. He looked almost a hundred years old and wore a huge turban and loose fitting clothes. He had a big, long beard which covered a major part of his chest and he looked as if he doesn't have any wife or children but had lots and lots of grandchildren.

The silvery locks remains scattered all over her pale puckered face and she spent most of the time in praying, telling the beads in her rosary and her lips moving in inaudible prayer. Though she looked ugly, she was quite beautiful in heart that she could be compared to the winter landscape in mountains, a living symbol of pure white serenity.
